BREAKING: The defending state champion Langdon Area/Munich has just clinched the Region 2B volleyball title after a decisive victory over Park River/Fordville-Lankin on October 26, 2023, in Devils Lake. This win sets them on a path for another shot at the state championship.
In a match that saw Langdon Area/Munich dominate with scores of 25-9, 25-15, and 25-13, the Cardinals displayed their experience and resilience. After trailing 7-5 in the third set, they surged back to a commanding 19-9 lead, showcasing their powerful defense and strategic serves.
“We were sparked by our defense tonight, there’s no question,” said coach Rich Olson. He highlighted the impressive performance of sophomore serve specialist Liv Prouty, whose contributions helped turn the tide.
Despite a brief setback, the Cardinals rallied behind a series of kills from players like Lexi Gendron and Kemi Morstad, who ultimately sealed the match with a block. Coach Olson praised the team’s energy and teamwork, stating, “We’re playing for each other and that’s fun.”
For Park River/Fordville-Lankin, this loss underscores their competitive spirit. Coach Nicole Wollangk, named Region 2B Coach of the Year, acknowledged her team’s challenges but remains optimistic about their upcoming state qualifier tournament in Jamestown. “We know we can compete at that level,” she stated, highlighting their potential for success in the postseason.
In individual performances, Hilary Haaven led Langdon Area/Munich with 15 kills and 23 digs, while Mya Swanson contributed seven kills and five aces. Meanwhile, Park River/Fordville-Lankin’s Lily Skibicki stood out with 17 digs.
The Langdon Area/Munich victory not only secures another title but also comes with a change in the state tournament structure to a three-class format this season. “This is just amazing. I love this group of girls,” said senior Raeleigh Ratzlaff about her teammates’ talent and camaraderie.
In other tournament action, Benson County triumphed over New Rockford-Sheyenne in the third-place match, winning 3-1 and setting up a do-or-die matchup for a state berth.
