UPDATE: Roger and Nancy Bowman of Lenhartsville have just been honored with the 2025 Friend of 4-H Award by Lehigh County 4-H for their decades-long dedication to agricultural education and youth development. This recognition highlights their transformative impact on 4-H members across Berks and Lehigh counties.
For over 30 years, the Bowmans have actively participated in 4-H, serving as leaders and mentors. Currently, they are instrumental in the Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club, working alongside their grandsons to inspire the next generation of agricultural enthusiasts. Their commitment to youth education is deeply rooted, stemming from their backgrounds as retired teachers.
The Bowmans purchased their farm in 1973 and have raised various livestock, focusing recently on purebred Corriedale and Dorset sheep. They regularly showcase their animals and wool fleeces at prestigious events such as the Allentown Fair, York Fair, Keystone International Livestock Expo, and the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
Significantly, the Bowmans have played key roles in local fairs, serving as sheep and goat superintendents at the Allentown Fair for the past 20 years. They are also vital in sheep and goat registration at the Schnecksville Fair, providing hands-on education that benefits thousands of youth.
“Roger and Nancy’s commitment to agricultural education has strengthened the knowledge and confidence of many 4-H youth,” said Kelly Weisner, Extension Educator for 4-H/Youth Development.
In 2022, they initiated an annual shawl project with the Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club, providing yarn, equipment, and instruction. This project has allowed club members to experience the full process from sheep-to-shawl, culminating in auctions that have raised a remarkable $9,550 for eight local charities over the last four years.
Additionally, the Bowmans have hosted workshops on wool grading and sheep breed characteristics, benefiting 4-H livestock and skillathon teams across Pennsylvania. Their efforts have not only educated but also inspired countless young individuals to explore agricultural careers.
As community leaders, Roger and Nancy’s legacy continues to grow, making agriculture accessible and engaging for today’s youth. The Bowmans’ story is a testament to how dedicated individuals can foster a love for agriculture among the next generation.
