Longwood Elementary Holiday Show Draws Record 80+ Performers

UPDATE: The annual holiday show at Longwood Elementary School in Glenwood witnessed a remarkable turnout this year, with over 80 students from kindergarten to fourth grade showcasing their talents on December 17, 2025. This unprecedented participation highlights the school’s commitment to inclusivity and music education.

The early morning choir practices, beginning at 7 a.m., allowed students like Skylar Jamison, age 9, to step out of their comfort zones and perform in front of an audience for the first time. Skylar expressed her initial nervousness but found joy in the experience, thanks to encouragement from friends who urged her to join the choir. “By the time the show ended, I felt happy,” she said, reflecting on her journey.

Principal Carnisha Mayze praised the high attendance, attributing it to the accommodating practice schedules that enabled students to participate without conflicting with after-school activities. “It’s important for young students to explore music,” Mayze stated, emphasizing how music fosters discipline, focus, and social connections among students.

The holiday concert transformed Longwood Elementary into a festive hub, where families engaged in various activities, including photos with Santa, crafting sessions, and enjoying hot cocoa. Mayze opened the school’s gym, library, and cafeteria for families to gather, fostering a sense of community. “I believe in that old saying, ‘it takes a village,’ and when children see that we have a good relationship with their families, they want to be here,” she added.

Skylar’s mother, Edrinna Jamison, highlighted the positive impact of choir on her daughter’s confidence and personality development. “I’m just trying to give her more personality and see what she likes,” she said, noting how the experience has helped Skylar embrace her individuality.

The holiday show not only celebrated music but also strengthened the bond between families and the school. Mayze expressed gratitude for the parents’ involvement, saying, “The parents support me, and they know that I’m going to treat their children like my own.” This partnership is crucial for enhancing student attendance and learning experiences.

As the school looks to build on this successful event, Mayze revealed plans for new activities next year, ensuring that the holiday show continues to be a cherished tradition. With the community’s backing and a focus on music education, Longwood Elementary is set to inspire even more young talents in the future.

This year’s holiday show was not just a performance but a celebration of community, growth, and the joy of music, making it a memorable experience for all involved.
