Man Arrested for Fatal Hit-and-Run of Line Worker in Selma

UPDATE: Authorities have arrested Ronald Mayo, 44, in connection with a deadly hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a line worker in Selma, North Carolina. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed that Mayo was taken into custody early Friday morning, following the tragic event that unfolded on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, around 5:20 PM.

The fatal incident occurred on Live Oak Church Road near Carmil Drive, where James P. Rudzki, a 29-year-old line worker from Wendell, was performing repairs on low-hanging power lines. Witnesses reported that Mayo, driving a flatbed tow truck hauling a sewer cleaner truck, disregarded a stop signal and crashed through the work zone. His vehicle became entangled with one of the power lines, leading to Rudzki’s tragic fall from the utility pole.

Troopers stated that after the incident, Mayo fled the scene in his tow truck but was apprehended shortly after. He faces serious charges, including felony hit-and-run involving a death, and is scheduled to appear before a judge at the Johnston County courthouse later today.
