UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, the Marin Catholic Wildcats were eliminated from the NorCal Division-I boys basketball championships after falling to the King’s Academy Knights 85-73 on Tuesday night in Kentfield. The Wildcats, ranked No. 8, faced the defending D-III champions, who showcased their formidable skills throughout the match.
With hopes high, it was a heartbreaking end to a remarkable season for Marin Catholic, who concluded their campaign with a record of 24-5. Under the leadership of first-year coach Kevin Vasquez, the Wildcats had exceeded expectations after being initially overlooked for the MCAL title. Vasquez emphasized the importance of their journey, stating, “What an incredible season… don’t let one game take anything away from what we did. It was truly a magical season.”
The night began with Marin Catholic taking an early lead, going into halftime ahead 40-37. Senior captain Joe Hammond noted, “We were confident coming into this game… but they were a very, very skilled team.” The Wildcats’ effort was fueled by sharp shooting from Oliver Myers, who scored 16 points, with 11 coming in the first half.
However, the tide turned in the second half as King’s Academy, boasting a record of 24-4, capitalized on every opportunity. Led by Adrian Barnett, who scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds, the Knights rallied back from behind, showcasing their depth with five players reaching double figures in scoring.
As the game unfolded, the Wildcats managed to tie the game at 58-58 early in the fourth quarter, but the Knights intensified their gameplay, ultimately pulling away in the final minutes. Vasquez acknowledged the challenge, saying, “We lost to a very good team without a doubt… we couldn’t get a stop or make a shot.”
While the pain of defeat was palpable in the locker room, Vasquez remains optimistic about the future, stressing the invaluable experience gained this season. “There were a lot of sad kids in that locker room… but when they look back on the season without emotion, they are going to realize what they accomplished,” he said.
As the Wildcats reflect on their journey, the focus now shifts to how this season will shape their future. The emotional highs and lows of this campaign are sure to have lasting impacts on the players and the Marin Catholic community. Fans and followers are left awaiting the next chapter in the Wildcats’ story, as they have proven their potential and resilience throughout this unforgettable season.
