Midland School Board to Vote on Superintendent’s Future Tonight

UPDATE: The Midland Public Schools Board of Education is set to make critical decisions regarding Superintendent Penny Miller-Nelson tonight, December 15, 2023, at their meeting starting at 7:00 PM. This urgent assembly will include evaluating Miller-Nelson’s performance and a potential contract renewal that could significantly impact the district’s leadership.

The board will convene at the MPS administration center located at 600 East Carpenter. Following a closed session under the Open Meetings Act to discuss Miller-Nelson’s personnel evaluation, the board will return to open session to cast votes on both the evaluation and the renewal of her contract. The decisions made tonight could shape the future direction of Midland Public Schools.

Additionally, the meeting will feature various presentations, including updates from the Shining Stars program and the Superintendent Student Advisory Team. Board President Phil Rausch is expected to provide insights into ongoing strategic and facility planning initiatives.

In a noteworthy development, the board will also deliberate on a resolution to sell a vacant property at 2900 Dauer Street to Midland County Habitat for Humanity for $250,000. This site, once home to Ashman School and later the Franklin Center, has been earmarked for the construction of 14 single-family homes to be built by students in the MPS building trades program, enriching both the community and the students’ educational experiences.

The meeting will also cover various updates and reports from the curriculum, instruction, assessment committee, and the finance, facilities, and operations committee. The board will review gifts totaling $27,800 to support various programs within the district.

As the board prepares to take decisive actions that could influence the district’s future, community members are encouraged to participate and share their thoughts during the public comment section.

NEXT: Following tonight’s pivotal meeting, the next gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, at 6:30 PM, marking the beginning of a new term for the board. Stay tuned for updates on the outcomes of tonight’s crucial evaluations and votes.
