Mikie Sherrill’s Inauguration Moves to Newark, Breaking 235-Year Tradition

UPDATE: Mikie Sherrill’s inauguration as New Jersey’s next governor will take place on January 20, 2024, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, breaking a 235-year tradition of holding ceremonies in Trenton. This unexpected shift was announced by Governor-elect Sherrill in a statement released earlier today.

The venue change marks a significant departure from the norm, as Sherrill will be sworn in alongside newly elected Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell in her home county of Essex. “I couldn’t be more honored to be sworn in as your next governor and begin my administration in the Gateway City,” Sherrill stated.

This inauguration is particularly momentous as it is the first time since 1790 that a first-term gubernatorial inauguration will be held outside of Trenton, where the ceremonies have been traditionally conducted since the establishment of New Jersey. The last time a gubernatorial inauguration took place at NJPAC was in January 1998, when Gov. Christine Todd Whitman took her oath for a second term due to renovations at the War Memorial.

Sherrill emphasized her commitment to all New Jerseyans, stating, “For more than a year, I’ve been up and down this state on a mission to deliver for all New Jerseyans – lower costs, a better future for our kids, and a more transparent and accountable state government.” She further articulated her leadership philosophy, pledging to listen to the people’s concerns and take action on their behalf.

With a capacity of 2,800 seats, NJPAC provides a larger venue than the Patriots Theater in Trenton, which has hosted inaugural ceremonies since 1932. This move reflects Sherrill’s intention to engage with her constituents and symbolize inclusivity in governance.

“It is such an honor that Gov-Elect Mikie Sherrill has chosen to be sworn into office in her home county of Essex,” said Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. “NJPAC is a state-of-the-art entertainment mecca and destination, and it will be an excellent opportunity to display all that Newark and Essex have to offer.”

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka expressed pride in hosting the inauguration, stating, “As New Jersey’s largest city, Newark is an appropriate setting for such a momentous occasion, bringing to bear its history of immigration, diversity, and shared democratic values.” He noted that the event would showcase Newark’s vibrancy to the world.

Sherrill, who lives in Montclair with her husband Jason Hedberg and their four children, will celebrate her 54th birthday just a day before the inauguration. Her leadership is anticipated to usher in a new era for New Jersey, focusing on community engagement and action-oriented governance.

This significant transition in the state’s political landscape is generating excitement and intrigue. As the inauguration approaches, all eyes will be on Newark and the implications of Sherrill’s leadership style for the future of New Jersey.

Stay tuned for further updates as we follow Sherrill’s inauguration and the developments that will shape her administration.
