Myrtle Beach Emerges as New Film Industry Hub Amid Production Surge

URGENT UPDATE: Myrtle Beach, SC, is rapidly positioning itself as a new hub for the film industry, fueled by an active production currently underway along the Grand Strand. Visit Myrtle Beach is working diligently to attract filmmakers, showcasing the region’s diverse landscapes as a significant draw for productions.

“Our varied scenery—from stunning beaches to historic plantations—makes Myrtle Beach a prime location for filmmakers,” stated Stuart Butler, President of Visit Myrtle Beach. As the area welcomes a production crew of over 50 members for a six-week shoot, the local economy stands to benefit significantly, especially during the off-season.

Film crews are not only filling local hotels but also dining in restaurants, enjoying attractions, and shopping at retail stores. Butler emphasized that this influx of activity creates essential job opportunities for local talent in the production industry.

“We help production teams navigate everything from permitting to logistics,” Butler explained, highlighting the resources available to support filmmakers. The trend of “set jetting,” where fans visit filming locations, is also gaining momentum, further boosting tourism potential.

Movie producer Ralph McCloud noted,

“When people see films shot in Myrtle Beach, they often say, ‘I’ve never been there, let’s look into it.’”

This trend could lead to increased visits from places as far away as Chicago and North Dakota, expanding the region’s appeal.

With film locations conveniently located within a 15-20 minute radius of each other—from oceanfront to farmland—Myrtle Beach presents a practical choice for film crews. “There’s a ton of accommodations available for actors and crew,” added McCloud, confirming the area’s readiness to host major productions.

The South Carolina Film Commission is already recommending Myrtle Beach as a filming site, joining a legacy of renowned productions like The Notebook, Forrest Gump, The Righteous Gemstones, and Outer Banks.

In a bid to further enhance its reputation, Visit Myrtle Beach plans to launch a new website later this year, offering detailed information for those interested in filming along the Grand Strand. This initiative marks a significant step toward solidifying Myrtle Beach’s status in the film industry.

As developments unfold, stakeholders are eager to see how this momentum will transform the local economy and community engagement. Stay tuned for more updates on this burgeoning film hub, as Myrtle Beach continues to capture the attention of filmmakers and tourists alike.
