UPDATE: The New Lenox Public Library has just launched an urgent care cabinet, providing essential items and Narcan to support community members in need, officially opening on December 4, 2023. This initiative addresses the increasing demand for assistance among residents facing recent cuts to federal programs, including food benefits.
Library Executive Director Michelle Krooswyk emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating it aims to alleviate the stigma often associated with asking for help. “We want to support you, no matter who you are,” Krooswyk said. The cabinet, which includes free resources such as shower products, deodorant, toothpaste, gloves, and first-aid supplies, was made possible through a $1,000 grant from the Friends of The New Lenox Library.
The cabinet was originally set to open in January 2026, but due to the urgent needs of lower-income residents, administrative coordinator Melissa Seaberg advocated for an earlier launch. The opening comes at a critical time when community members are struggling to access basic necessities.
The care cabinet is designed for discretion, allowing users to take what they need without any questions asked. Seaberg remarked, “This helps people get what they need in a dignified way.” Early reports indicate that supplies, particularly lip balm, gloves, and deodorant, are being utilized rapidly, demonstrating the significant demand within the community.
The library has partnered with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization to distribute Narcan, a life-saving medication used to reverse opioid overdoses. Krooswyk encouraged residents to participate in Narcan training sessions to enhance community safety.
Community support has been overwhelming, with residents contributing items to the cabinet. However, to maintain hygiene standards, library staff request that donations not be placed directly in the cabinet. Instead, they are encouraging monetary contributions through the library’s website or an Amazon wish list to ensure quality.
The care cabinet’s inspiration came from a successful initiative presented by the Rock Island Public Library. “We like to share ideas that work,” Krooswyk explained, emphasizing the collaborative spirit among libraries.
In addition to the care cabinet, the library is taking steps to address other community needs. These include services for job seekers, tech support for older adults, and a warm space for unhoused residents. The library also has plans for a new café space to open in January, alongside a winter reading program to engage the community.
The care cabinet will remain accessible during library hours, and the crocheted cat fundraiser, designed to support the initiative, concludes on December 16, 2023. As the library approaches its 25th anniversary next year, further renovations and improvements are under discussion to enhance community support services.
The New Lenox Public Library is not just about books; it’s a vital community resource, poised to make a lasting impact in the lives of its residents. For more information on how to support this initiative, visit newlenoxlibrary.org.
