New York City Launches Urgent Christmas Tree Recycling Program

URGENT UPDATE: New York City has just announced a major enhancement to its Christmas tree disposal options, effective immediately. Residents can now compost their real holiday trees and wreaths alongside food scraps and yard waste on their designated recycling days, according to the NYC Department of Sanitation.

This new initiative allows New Yorkers to avoid waiting for specific collection days, making it easier than ever to dispose of holiday greenery. Simply place your tree at the curb next to other compostable materials, ensuring all decorations, stands, and plastic coverings are removed. Once collected, these trees are processed into compost or renewable energy, significantly contributing to the city’s sustainability efforts.

For those with artificial trees, the process is slightly different. Residents must remove the metal base and trunk for metal recycling. Alternatively, you can participate in the city’s annual Mulchfest event, running from December 26, 2025, to January 11, 2026. During this period, residents can drop off their trees at designated Mulchfest locations across the city, where they will be transformed into wood chips to nourish urban greenery.

Chipping Weekend is set for January 10 and 11, 2026, where participants can take home a bag of mulch for personal use—perfect for gardens or enhancing the city’s tree beds. Last year, over 52,500 trees were successfully recycled through this initiative, showcasing New Yorkers’ commitment to sustainability.

Residents are encouraged to visit the NYC Parks website to locate a Mulchfest drop-off site near them. This program not only helps in waste reduction but also promotes a greener New York City for all.

With the holiday season concluding, residents are urged to act promptly to ensure their trees are recycled effectively. Make your contribution to a cleaner, greener city today!
