Newark Initiative Supports Grandparents Raising Grandchildren NOW

UPDATE: A groundbreaking initiative in Newark is urgently addressing the struggles of grandparents raising their grandchildren. This program, launched by Rutgers University and CareSparc, aims to provide crucial support to families like those of Jacqueline Williams and Jenny Arroyo, who are navigating unprecedented challenges.

Jacqueline Williams tragically lost her daughter, Tenasia, in a car accident, prompting her to adopt her daughter’s children. “I got a four-year-old, and I got a two-year-old, and the two-year-old is non-verbal,” Williams shared. “I have to pay attention to a lot of his needs.” Meanwhile, Jenny Arroyo stepped in when her daughter walked away from motherhood, stating, “I wouldn’t want my grandchild somewhere out in the world… not being able to get in contact with her.”

This initiative comes as new data reveals that across the United States, 2.5 million grandparents are raising their grandchildren, with nearly 50,000 residing in New Jersey. The financial implications are staggering; these caregivers save taxpayers an estimated $10.5 billion by preventing these children from entering the foster care system.

As the number of grandparents taking on this role grows, particularly in underserved communities plagued by violence and substance abuse, organizations like CareSparc are stepping in to alleviate the burden. Executive Director Keith Da Costa emphasized, “Focusing on their self-care is essential; if you don’t care for yourself, there’s no way you’re going to be able to provide care for the kids.”

The initiative offers vital services such as financial assistance, mental health support, and tutoring for the children. Grandparents have expressed immense gratitude for this support. Natasha Harmon, another participant, shared, “They made my Christmas for my grandkids amazing. My grandson said, ‘I thought my Christmas was going to be messed up, but it was really nice.'”

This urgent effort not only meets immediate needs but also fosters a sense of community and stability for families in crisis. As these grandparents step up to ensure their grandchildren’s well-being, the initiative stands as a beacon of hope and support.

As the program expands, community members are encouraged to get involved. The collaboration between Rutgers University and CareSparc represents a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by these often-overlooked heroes.
