Orono High School Inducts 5 New Hall of Fame Members Saturday

UPDATE: The Orono High School Athletic Hall of Fame will welcome five new members this Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 3:30 p.m. The induction ceremony is set to take place at the high school, coinciding with the home basketball games of the girls’ and boys’ Red Riot teams, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere of the day.

Among those being honored are two legendary basketball coaches, Bob Cimbollek and John Giffin, who have made significant contributions to the school’s athletic legacy. They will be joined by Jeff Mateja, a standout athlete from the class of 1997, and community stalwarts Diann and Bill Libby, recognized for their extensive volunteer work in the local sports scene.

Cimbollek, who coached from 1963 to 1969, achieved an impressive record of 106-32 during his tenure and led the team to two state championships in 1967 and 1969. His coaching journey continued at Bangor High School and John Bapst, where he amassed a total of five state titles. His impact on young athletes extends beyond the court, as he also taught physical education and played basketball at what is now Husson University.

Following Cimbollek, Giffin took the reins as boys’ basketball coach and physical education teacher. Under his guidance, the team won 136 games over nine seasons, including a perfect 22-0 championship season in 1973. Giffin earned statewide recognition as coach of the year during his impactful career.

As a three-sport athlete, Jeff Mateja excelled in soccer and track, setting multiple school records in hurdling events. His leadership on and off the field helped propel his teams to numerous championships, and he continued his athletic journey at Bentley University.

The Libby duo will be honored in the “special contributor” category for their unwavering dedication to Orono athletics. Diann Libby has been a familiar face in various roles, from volunteering with youth programs to managing basketball scorebooks for over 25 years. Bill Libby served as the school’s football announcer for nearly 20 years and was a vital part of the football chain crew, becoming the voice of Orono athletics across numerous sports.

This induction ceremony not only celebrates the achievements of these remarkable individuals but also recognizes the profound impact they have had on the community and its youth. The event promises to bring together athletes, families, and fans, creating an emotional and memorable experience for everyone involved.

What’s next? The community is encouraged to attend the ceremony and cheer on the Red Riot teams during their home games, making this day a true celebration of Orono’s rich athletic history. Don’t miss this opportunity to honor local legends and support the next generation of athletes!
