UPDATE: As New Year’s Eve celebrations kick off across the Phoenix area, revelers have multiple safe transportation options to ensure a secure ride home. Starting at 7 p.m. on December 31, 2025, all light rail and bus rides provided by Valley Metro will be FREE thanks to a partnership with Coors Light. This initiative continues into the early morning hours of January 1, 2026.
With safety as a priority, rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are offering discounted rates for riders looking to avoid the risks of driving after drinking. The convenience of these services means fewer decisions to make at the end of the night, allowing party-goers to focus on enjoying their celebrations without the worry of getting behind the wheel.
Local officials emphasize the importance of safety during this festive time.
“Verify the driver’s information. Verify the car information—make, model, license plate—before getting inside the car, if possible,”
advised Lindsey Fernandez, public information officer for the Tempe Police Department. Riders are encouraged to sit in the backseat and be aware of their surroundings.
Residents like Jessica Kuna are taking precautions as they plan their New Year’s Eve outings. “I usually always ride with a friend. If my husband can’t drive, we use Waymo or something like that. It just doesn’t seem worth it to even take one drink and try to drive,” she shared.
Authorities are urging everyone to take advantage of these safe transportation options. With the combination of free public transport and discounted rideshare services, the Phoenix area is prioritizing safety for all New Year’s revelers.
As the clock ticks down to midnight, the message is clear: Celebrate smart, and don’t risk your safety or the safety of others. Make the most of the resources available, and ring in 2026 with peace of mind.
