Raiders Edge Out Cougars in Thrilling Conference Tournament Showdown

In a tightly contested match, the South Rowan Raiders triumphed over the Carson Cougars with a score of 49-46 in the first round of the South Piedmont Conference Tournament on March 5, 2024. The game showcased the pivotal performance of junior guard Christine Wilhoit, who scored 10 points, including three crucial three-pointers that helped secure the victory for her team.

South Rowan’s head coach, Alex Downs, praised Wilhoit’s impact, stating, “She made the shot that put us over the top.” Wilhoit has demonstrated her ability to change the game’s momentum throughout the season, previously contributing significantly in a 58-52 win against Robinson with 13 points off the bench.

The Raiders, seeded fourth, improved their record to 15-9 after this win, having previously faced fifth-seeded Carson three times this season, winning two of those encounters. The match was marked by a strong defensive effort from both teams, but South’s performance in the third quarter proved to be decisive.

Meghan Eagle shone for South, scoring a career-high 18 points and displaying versatility in defense, passing, and scoring. Coach Downs remarked, “She had a phenomenal game.” Meanwhile, for Carson, junior guard Julia Burleson led her team with 12 points, while freshmen Cambrie Perry, Audrey Faggart, and Braylee Johnson combined for 28 points.

Despite their efforts, Carson faced challenges, with key players, including leading scorer Rylee Hedrick and guard Brooklyn Johnson, unable to participate due to injuries. Coach Chloe Monroe acknowledged the team’s struggle, saying, “We fought really hard and had every opportunity to win it. We just couldn’t hit shots at the end when it mattered most.”

The Cougars had a rocky start but managed to tie the game at 18 by halftime. However, South Rowan pulled ahead decisively in the third quarter, with Eagle contributing nine points during that period. Carson will still have a chance to compete in the 5A playoffs and is hopeful for a healthier roster in the upcoming games.

Northwest Cabarrus Dominates Concord

In another match of the tournament, top-seeded Northwest Cabarrus crushed eighth-seeded Concord with a staggering 65-6 victory. The standout player, MacKenzie Ortscheid, scored 21 points and recorded 10 rebounds, recently breaking the program’s career scoring record. Teammate Ava Ibanez made headlines by amassing 13 steals during the game.

Concord struggled throughout the match, failing to score in the second half and finishing their season with a disappointing record of 1-22. Northwest Cabarrus, now boasting a record of 21-4, will face South Rowan in the semifinals scheduled for March 7, 2024, at 18:00.

As the tournament progresses, both South Rowan and Northwest Cabarrus will aim to capitalize on their momentum, striving for championship glory in the South Piedmont Conference.
