Salvation Army Urgently Seeks 400 Toys for Local Families This Christmas

UPDATE: The Salvation Army is urgently calling for toy donations to support 400 local families in San Diego this Christmas, with just one week left to meet their goal. The organization is currently facing a critical shortage, needing hundreds more toys before distribution begins.

Inside the Salvation Army Kroc Center warehouse, a variety of toys—including basketballs, dolls, and colored markers—are stacked high, but the collection remains significantly below what is required. “Even like a Barbie house, this is something that we’ll put aside specifically for a family that maybe we know had a bit extra difficult time this year,” said Glynis Eckert, director of marketing for the Kroc Center.

The toy drive is falling short across multiple age groups, particularly for older children. “The age groups that we get the most donations for tend to be younger children, but our pre-selected families can register their children of all ages, from 0 to 12 years old,” explained Janet Reade, director of volunteers and community engagement.

Time is running out as parents from a pre-registered list will be selecting toys next week. The Salvation Army aims to provide each child with three to four toys to ensure a joyful Christmas experience. “We, of course, are hoping to have every parent be able to get three or four toys for their children,” Eckert stated.

If the toy shortage persists, the Salvation Army may have to purchase toys out of pocket, straining their financial resources and impacting their broader mission to spread holiday joy. The organization is committed to delivering a complete Christmas experience, including a sack full of toys, gift wrap, bows, gift tags, and food boxes for families.

Donations can be made in person at the Kroc Center, online, or through monetary contributions. Every effort counts in making this holiday season special for those in need. Click here to donate and help make a difference.

As the clock ticks down, community members are urged to step up and support this vital cause. The Salvation Army’s commitment to ensuring that every child experiences the joy of Christmas depends on the generosity of local donors.
