San Jose State Surges Past Hawaii 45-38 in Thrilling Comeback

UPDATE: In a dramatic showdown, the San Jose State Spartans clinched a thrilling 45-38 victory over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Saturday night in the Dick Tomey Legacy Game. The Spartans’ win marks their fifth consecutive triumph in this pivotal matchup.

Despite trailing 31-14 at halftime, Hawaii (6-3) made a fierce comeback, closing the gap to just one score with only 1:16 left on the clock. However, a crucial onside kick attempt rolled out of bounds, sealing the fate of the game for the Spartans (3-5).

Star wide receiver Danny Scudero showcased a stellar performance, racking up a career-high 215 receiving yards with two touchdown catches. His impactful plays came at critical moments, including a 62-yard touchdown that extended San Jose State’s lead early in the second half.

The game was a showcase of high-powered offenses, with Hawaii’s quarterback Micah Alejado launching a quick eight-yard touchdown to running back Landon Sims right after halftime, narrowing the score to 31-21. Nevertheless, the Spartans quickly responded with another spectacular touchdown from Eget to Scudero.

Hawaii’s Alejado struck back with a 68-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jackson Harris, but San Jose State maintained their composure. Eget connected with Scudero again for a 50-yard touchdown, helping to solidify their lead at 28-14.

Defensive highlights included a pivotal sack by linebacker Jordan Pollard, which halted a Hawaii drive and allowed the Spartans to extend their lead with a 24-yard field goal from Matthias Brown.

Eget’s passing stats were impressive, finishing 20-for-40 with 458 yards and two touchdowns. Scudero, alongside teammates Leland Smith and Kyri Shoels, joined the 100-yard receiving club for the second time this season.

Hawaii threatened again in the fourth quarter, closing the score to 38-35 following a 20-yard touchdown pass from Alejado to Pofele Ashlock Harris with 9:32 left. Yet, the Spartans responded decisively with running back Steve Chavez-Soto scoring on a one-yard run, pushing the lead to 45-35 with just over five minutes remaining.

Chavez-Soto was a key player, contributing three rushing touchdowns as he and fellow running back Lamar Radcliffe combined for 150 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Looking ahead, San Jose State will host the Air Force Falcons on November 8, with kickoff set for 3 p.m., as they aim to build on this thrilling victory.
