UPDATE: The City of Santa Clarita marked the official start of the holiday season with an electrifying tree lighting ceremony at The Cube Ice and Entertainment Center on December 5, 2025. As the crowd erupted in cheers, Mayor Bill Miranda successfully launched a glowing puck into the rink’s goal, illuminating a magnificent Christmas tree that now stands at the center of the facility.
This year’s event drew families and community members together for a night filled with holiday cheer, performances, and ice-skating. The excitement reached a fever pitch as attendees counted down, “3… 2… 1!” before the puck lit up the rink, signaling the start of the festive season.
“I didn’t think they would turn off the lights!” Miranda exclaimed after the successful launch, which marked a pivotal moment in the community’s celebration. The Cube has become a cherished venue, especially after its near closure in March 2020. With a purchase price of $14.95 million, the city recognized its importance, as it was the second most used venue in the valley, serving a wide array of sports and community activities.
During the ceremony, the Los Angeles Kings mascot, Bailey the Lion, and former NHL player and current analyst Daryl Evans joined the festivities, highlighting the rink’s connection to local sports culture. “It’s a full house here today, and it shows how critical it was for us to save this ice station,” Miranda noted. The Cube now hosts the UCLA Men’s Hockey Team, the West Ranch Hockey Club, and youth hockey programs, becoming a hub for sports and community engagement.
Attendees were treated to a preview of the fifth annual Holiday Ice Skating Show titled “A Nutcracker Fantasy,” which is set to premiere later this week. The show will feature additional performances on December 6 at 12 PM and 5 PM. “These skaters pour a lot of work and energy into getting good at their skill sets,” Miranda stated, recognizing the dedication of the performers.
As the city looks ahead, plans are already in motion to upgrade The Cube. Councilwoman Marsha McLean confirmed that improvements, including a new Zamboni and potential bleacher installations, are under consideration to enhance the community experience further.
The spirit of the evening resonated with families who enjoyed ice skating, with some experiencing the rink for the first time. As they glided around the illuminated tree, it was clear that The Cube has become much more than just an ice rink—it’s a vital community resource.
Miranda expressed gratitude towards the staff and volunteers who made the event possible, emphasizing the profound impact The Cube has on the Santa Clarita Valley. This celebration not only marked the beginning of the holiday season but also reinforced the importance of community spirit and togetherness.
As Santa Clarita embraces its vibrant winter festivities, residents and visitors alike are reminded of the joy and unity that The Cube continues to foster. The annual tree lighting ceremony is not just a celebration of the holidays; it’s a testament to the resilience and passion of the community that fought to keep this beloved venue alive.
