Second Driver Dies in Violent San Jose DUI Crash; Investigation Ongoing

UPDATE: A second driver has tragically died following a horrific head-on crash in Willow Glen, San Jose, raising urgent concerns about DUI incidents in the area. Police confirm that Christian Herbert Hygelund, 81, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday after the violent collision that initially killed 74-year-old Ellen Jo Orcutt last Saturday.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 2:35 p.m. on Saturday when Hygelund, driving a white 2018 GMC Yukon, attempted to pass another vehicle on Foxworthy Avenue. Instead of overtaking the green 2018 Subaru Forester, he veered into oncoming traffic, crashing head-on into a blue 2012 Honda CR-V. Orcutt, who was behind the wheel of the Honda, died instantly at the scene.

Authorities report that Hygelund was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and remained in critical condition until his death. Investigators now suspect that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. A thorough investigation is underway, and police are urging anyone with information to contact Detective Tori DelliCarpini of the SJPD traffic investigations unit.

The collision marks the city’s 31st and 32nd traffic fatalities of the year, alarming community members as these figures highlight a significant rise in traffic-related deaths compared to 44 fatalities recorded at the same time in 2024.

Orcutt, a beloved community advocate known for her dedication to supporting the unhoused and impoverished families, is being remembered fondly by her family and friends. A GoFundMe page set up by her daughter reveals the profound impact she had on her community. “She was truly cherished by all who knew her,” her daughter stated, adding that any contributions will be directed to charities aligned with Orcutt’s values after covering funeral expenses.

The community mourns the loss of Orcutt while grappling with the implications of this tragic event. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and officials are focusing on the alarming trend of DUI-related accidents in the area.

As San Jose continues to deal with the aftermath of this devastating incident, residents are reminded of the importance of responsible driving. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
