Small Business Saturday Thrives in West Reading, Boosting Local Shops

UPDATE: Thousands flocked to West Reading today for Small Business Saturday, igniting a surge of local shopping that highlights community spirit just in time for the holiday season. Independent shops lining Penn Avenue buzzed with activity as families took part in the festivities throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

Local resident Joanne Henny, accompanied by her daughter and granddaughter, embraced the tradition at Taste of Crepes before diving into holiday shopping. “It’s the one-on-one,” Henny expressed, emphasizing her preference for local shops over big-box stores. “They know their product. It’s not just a sale.”

With events kicking off at 11 AM, shoppers enjoyed a festive atmosphere filled with activities. Volunteers distributed canvas shopping totes while a DJ entertained crowds waiting for Santa Claus, who posed for free photos from noon to 3 PM. North Sixth Avenue was closed to traffic, allowing families to stroll freely through the heart of West Reading.

Local business owners Allison Shannon and Brian Adams, who helped run the day’s activities, reinforced the significance of this event. “This is the bread and butter of our local communities,” said Shannon, owner of Allison Clothing Company & Boutique. “Without it, there’s no community feeling.”

Adams, owner of The Art Room, added, “New stores are coming in, old ones are going out, and with support, that’s what keeps us alive. We’re really the heart of the county.” The diverse selection of restaurants, boutiques, and specialty shops makes Penn Avenue a unique destination for shoppers looking for gifts that stand out.

As shoppers perused stores, Nick Price, West Reading’s Main Street manager, called today the official kickoff for the holiday season. “Our businesses have already started decorating the windows,” Price noted. “This is an important month for them, and today brings a little fun with it.”

In addition to Santa and the festive music, shoppers had the chance to spin a prize wheel for just $5, with winners receiving items donated by local businesses. “We even have a heated tent giving out free massages,” Price joked, highlighting the community focus of the event.

The turnout for Small Business Saturday underscores a growing trend towards supporting local businesses, especially as shoppers seek unique gifts and experiences. Local resident Taryn Shillady remarked, “I’ll definitely be looking around because I like small rather than big box.” Her daughter enjoyed a kid-themed crepe, a nod to the creative offerings available from local vendors.

The vibrant shopping scene today also included families and high school friends exploring the avenue. Shoppers expressed gratitude for the personalized service and unique products available only in independent stores. “Online is boring,” said Michelle Pieller, who traveled from Delaware to join her family in the tradition. “I like to feel stuff, the material, and look at things.”

As the day unfolds, local merchants reflect on the importance of these community-driven events. “This is what brings people together,” said Adams. “It’s not just about shopping; it’s about creating a sense of belonging.”

With Small Business Saturday now underway, the community of West Reading showcases the undeniable impact of supporting local businesses during the holiday season. As shoppers continue to arrive, the energy remains high, making it clear that this event is vital for the local economy and community pride.
