South Korea’s Online Interests Surge: AI, K-Culture, and More

URGENT UPDATE: New survey results reveal that artificial intelligence, K-culture, and the concept of “authentic self” are dominating online interests in South Korea this year. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism released the findings on December 31, showcasing a striking 44% increase in online mentions related to AI compared to last year.

This surge in interest reflects not only the convenience of AI technologies but also growing public concerns regarding job security, safety, and fairness in its regulation. Key topics associated with this rise include security, policy, and the broader implications of AI’s integration into everyday life.

In addition to AI, online discussions surrounding K-culture also skyrocketed, increasing by 31%. The ministry highlighted the global fascination with content such as the animated series “K-Pop Demon Hunters.” Frequently mentioned terms include traditional hanbok, K-pop, Korean cuisine, and cultural idols, indicating a robust and thriving cultural export.

Furthermore, discussions on the “authentic self,” which emphasizes personal identity and individual life choices, rose by 10%. The ministry pointed out that this trend reflects a societal shift towards self-determination, with keywords such as individual, identity, choice, and self-empowerment emerging in dialogues.

The findings were derived from an extensive analysis of 538 million online data points gathered from news articles, social media, online communities, and video platforms between January and November 2026.

Lee Jeong-eun, the director of digital communication at the ministry, emphasized that these insights will be crucial for the government in anticipating public demand and enhancing effective communication strategies.

The implications of these trends are significant, as they suggest a deepening engagement among South Koreans with both technology and culture. As these discussions evolve, they are poised to impact everything from policy-making to cultural production, reflecting the dynamic interplay between society and digital innovation.
