Russell’s impressive season concluded with a record of 33 wins and 9 losses, bringing his career total to 54 victories. As his coach, Mike Runyon, stated, “About halfway through the season, you could tell he was starting to get confidence in himself. It was great to see him realize, ‘Hey, I can get this done.'”
Russell’s journey to the medal podium began with a strong performance at the sectional, where he took first place, followed by his first regional title and a third-place finish at semi-state. Additionally, he captured the title at the Jeffersonville Invitational and placed sixth at the Al Smith Classic.
The impact of Russell’s achievement is monumental, as he is the first Panther to receive the All-Area honor in 11 consecutive years. This recognition not only highlights his individual success but also underscores the strength of the wrestling program at Bloomington South.
