Spare the Air Alert Declared for New Year’s Day in Bay Area

URGENT UPDATE: The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has just issued a Spare the Air Alert for January 1, 2026, prohibiting all wood-burning activities. This directive comes as personal fireworks and residential wood burning are predicted to elevate pollution levels significantly on New Year’s Day.

The alert highlights the potential for localized air quality deterioration, as officials expect fine particulate matter to spike to levels above 2.5 micrograms per cubic meter. The alert marks the first day of the new year and follows four similar alerts issued throughout 2025, including one during Thanksgiving.

Air quality forecasts indicate that the region will experience moderately healthy air on December 31, but conditions are expected to worsen significantly by New Year’s Day. The Bay Area is projected to see an increase in particulate matter concentrations, rising from high 50s and low 60s earlier this week to the 80s by Thursday. Residents are urged to refrain from burning wood, as air quality deteriorates.

In addition to pollution concerns, weather conditions are set to change dramatically. The National Weather Service has warned of widespread showers beginning on Wednesday, with 1 to 1.5 inches of rain expected across the region. Some areas could see up to 2-3 inches of rainfall, compounding the potential for flooding.

Coastal areas are also bracing for severe weather impacts. A coastal flood advisory will be in effect from 5 a.m. January 1 until 2 p.m. January 4, with king tides expected to affect beaches from Cloverdale to Monterey.

Officials urge residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions as these weather changes unfold. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District emphasizes the importance of protecting public health by adhering to the Spare the Air Alert and monitoring air quality updates.

As the New Year approaches, individuals are strongly advised to celebrate responsibly and prioritize air quality for the health of the community. Follow local authorities for the latest updates and stay tuned to official announcements as this situation develops.
