Tampa Residents to Protest TECO Rate Hikes with ‘Burn the Bill’ Rally

UPDATE: Tampa residents are set to take a stand against soaring electricity costs with a symbolic “Burn the Bill Rally” scheduled for Saturday, October 14, 2024, at 10 a.m. The protest will take place at the Dr. Walter Smith Library & Museum as frustration boils over TECO’s recent rate hikes.

Local leaders, including U.S. Rep Kathy Castor, will address the community about TECO’s price increases, which are reported to be among the highest in the nation. This year’s rate hikes have left the utility’s 830,000 customers scrambling to cover an additional $29 to $38 a month just to keep their lights on.

“This is not just about bills; it’s about survival. Families are being forced to choose between power and groceries,” Castor stated in a recent release.

In response to the growing unrest, TECO has defended the increases, citing significant damage to its power grid from the 2024 hurricanes. A TECO spokesperson stated, “To lessen the impact on our customers’ bills, we spread the recovery costs over 18 months. These charges will conclude in September 2024, leading to a projected drop of about $20 on a typical 1,000-kilowatt-hour residential bill.”

TECO has also announced a commitment of $2 million to its Share program, aimed at assisting struggling customers. The funds, provided by shareholders, will be distributed through local organizations like Metropolitan Ministries, the Salvation Army, and the Catholic Charities Diocese of St. Petersburg.

The spokesperson emphasized the company’s efforts to provide financial relief through programs like Budget Billing, which helps stabilize monthly payments, and Due Date Plus, tailored for customers on fixed incomes.

Despite these measures, community leaders and residents remain skeptical. Many are demanding more transparency and accountability from TECO regarding its pricing strategies and operational costs.

As the rally approaches, the urgency for change is palpable. Local advocates stress that immediate action is needed to ensure affordable energy for all.

Residents are encouraged to join the rally to voice their concerns. For those seeking assistance, more information can be found at www.TampaElectric.com/PayAssist.
