Target Cuts 500 Roles to Streamline Operations and Enhance Service

Target Corp. is implementing significant changes by cutting approximately 500 roles as part of a broader strategy to simplify its operations. This reorganization aims to enhance the shopping experience for customers in its stores. The decision, announced on February 9, 2024, is intended to streamline the company’s field structure and empower store directors to better address customer needs, according to a memo from Adrienne Costanzo, Chief Stores Officer, and Gretchen McCarthy, Chief Supply Chain and Logistics Officer.

The restructuring will eliminate 400 roles at various supply-chain sites, allowing Target to allocate more resources toward staffing in its stores. Additionally, around 100 positions supporting store operations will also be cut. These include senior directors, human resources business partners, and food and beverage coordinator roles. A spokesperson for Target declined to provide further comments on the changes.

New Leadership and Focus on Customer Experience

Based in Minneapolis, Target is striving to rejuvenate its growth under the leadership of new CEO Michael Fiddelke. Improving the in-store experience is a central priority as the company works to reverse a prolonged period of declining sales. Recent initiatives include reducing wait times and enhancing in-stock availability across approximately 2,000 locations. Store staff have also been encouraged to engage more actively with shoppers, emphasizing friendliness through smiles and eye contact.

Over the past year, Target’s shares have experienced a decline of approximately 12%. As part of its strategy to regain customer trust, Fiddelke acknowledged in his first town hall meeting that the company had lost confidence among some shoppers and employees. He emphasized the need to rebuild that connection.

In addition to the recent job cuts, Target previously eliminated about 1,800 corporate roles in what marked its first major reorganization in a decade. The ongoing changes reflect a concerted effort to improve operational efficiency and adapt to the evolving retail landscape.

The retailer’s focus on technology and product quality is also a key component of its revitalization strategy. By leveraging technology more effectively and enhancing merchandise offerings, Target aims to reestablish itself as a prominent player in the retail sector.
