Tennessee Candidate Aftyn Behn Faces Backlash Over Past Comments

UPDATE: Tennessee Democratic congressional candidate Aftyn Behn is under fire for past controversial comments as she campaigns for the 7th district. In a heated exchange on CNN’s “Inside Politics Sunday” with host Manu Raju, Behn defended statements made as a private citizen, claiming she has matured since then.

During the interview, Raju confronted Behn about her past tweets, including one that justified the burning of a police station during the nationwide protests following the death of George Floyd in 2020. Behn responded, “Yeah, I said that during the George Floyd moment when the entire country was demanding accountability and safer policing.” She emphasized the need for community investment but did not express regret for her past remarks.

In addition to her tweets, Behn previously expressed her disdain for Nashville, stating, “I hate the bachelorettes, I hate the pedal taverns, I hate country music.” Raju pressed her on whether these comments were a mistake. “Once again, I was a private citizen. Nashville is my home,” Behn said, adding that her focus is now on the rising costs impacting families in Middle Tennessee.

Behn’s comments in a 2019 op-ed also labeled Tennessee as a “racist state,” claiming systemic racism permeates state legislation. “Our problem with racism in this state is wild and untamed,” she wrote, further igniting controversy as she prepares for the special election triggered by the resignation of Republican Rep. Mark Green on July 4, 2025.

With the special election approaching, Behn’s past remarks are stirring debates about her candidacy and the issues facing Tennessee residents. As voters weigh their options, her statements may play a pivotal role in the election outcome.

As this story develops, all eyes will be on the response from constituents and the impact of her past on her political future. Will Behn’s previous comments alienate potential voters, or will her current focus on safety and affordability resonate with the community? Stay tuned for updates as the election date approaches.
