UPDATE: On November 1, 2023, thousands gathered in downtown Oklahoma City for the dedication of the Clara Luper National Sit-In Plaza, a powerful tribute to the Civil Rights Movement. This landmark celebration marks a pivotal moment in history, honoring the legacy of Clara Luper and the original 13 student members of the NAACP Youth Council who staged a sit-in at Katz Drug Store on August 19, 1958.
The plaza, located at the historic site of the former Katz Drug Store at North Robinson Avenue and West Main Street, features a stunning 4-ton bronze lunch counter with life-sized depictions of the sit-in participants. This installation serves as a reminder of the courage displayed by these young activists, whose actions led to the desegregation of Katz stores within just three days and sparked a national wave of sit-ins.
During the dedication ceremony, attendees enjoyed musical performances from local choirs and heard heartfelt remarks from key speakers, including Marilyn Luper Hildreth, Clara Luper’s daughter. Hildreth emphasized the importance of this moment, stating, “For so long, this moment in Oklahoma City has been overlooked in the history books, yet it helped change the nation.” She expressed her belief that the bronze sculpture would ensure future generations understand the impact of ordinary young people uniting for extraordinary change.
The dedication drew significant community support, with notable figures such as Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt, Rev. Dr. Lee Cooper Jr., and representatives from StudioEIS, the acclaimed design firm responsible for the plaza’s artwork. “This project has been one of the most collaborative undertakings in our 50 years,” said Elliot Schwartz, founder of StudioEIS, highlighting the spirit of unity that inspired the sit-in movement.
As attendees explored the new plaza, project developer John Kennedy remarked, “We are proud to recognize the courage and vision of the original 13 sit-inners and their teacher, Ms. Luper. May we never forget that we all have an opportunity to make a difference.”
The Clara Luper National Sit-In Plaza was funded entirely through private donations, showcasing the community’s commitment to honoring this significant chapter in American history. Key contributors include the American Fidelity Foundation, Chickasaw Nation, and the Hamm Family, among many others.
This dedication not only celebrates a historic event but also serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality. It invites all who visit to reflect on the past while inspiring future generations to continue advocating for justice and change.
As this story continues to resonate, the Clara Luper National Sit-In Plaza stands as a beacon of hope and courage for all, ensuring that the sacrifices made for civil rights will never be forgotten.
