U.S. Highway 12 Reopens to One Lane After Urgent Rock Cleanup

UPDATE: Urgent cleanup efforts are underway on U.S. Highway 12 near Arrow, Idaho, following the successful completion of rock scaling work. The highway reopened to one lane at approximately 4 p.m. yesterday after extensive work by crews, but motorists should prepare for delays of up to 20 minutes as flaggers manage traffic flow.

Officials from the Idaho Transportation Department confirmed that the initial rock scaling and excavation phases wrapped up earlier than expected, finishing about two hours ahead of schedule. Spokesperson Mark Pfeifer reported that the material was “pretty crumbly,” allowing workers to bring down debris more efficiently. “Cleanup efforts are underway,” he added.

As of this morning, traffic on U.S. Highway 12 remains restricted to one lane, with flaggers directing vehicles to ensure safety. The department anticipates that two-lane traffic may resume in the near future, depending on the progress of cleanup operations.

This emergency project, initiated last week, aims to safeguard motorists from potential rock slides, a significant hazard in the region. Crews utilized specialized climbing gear and innovative techniques, including inflatable airbags, to dislodge unstable rocks. An excavator was also deployed to navigate the steep terrain and remove additional debris.

Motorists are advised to stay updated on traffic conditions through the agency’s travel website at 511.idaho.gov and their official Facebook page. The urgency of this situation highlights the importance of caution when traveling through potentially hazardous areas.

As cleanup continues, the Idaho Transportation Department remains committed to minimizing disruptions while ensuring the safety of all travelers. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
