The announcement was made on November 14, 2023, with Thomas earning recognition for his impressive 120 tackles, ranking him 11th in the program’s history.
This recognition comes at a critical time for the Black Bears, who finished the season with a 6-6 record. Thomas not only led the team with 12 tackles for loss but also recorded five sacks, demonstrating his pivotal role on the defensive line.
Head coach Jordan Stevens praised Thomas, stating, “He has been relentless to the ball. He finds a way to get to the ball. He has a tenacity and a passion you can feel when he plays.” This accolade highlights Thomas’s extraordinary contributions throughout the season, including five games with 10 or more tackles and a remarkable 19 tackles in a loss to CAA champion Rhode Island.
In addition to Thomas’s first-team honors, five other Black Bears received accolades. Woods made headlines with an 85-yard touchdown return against Elon and led the team with 55 catches for 653 yards and five touchdowns.
Two other standout players, Anthony Iliano and Devin Vaught, were named to the second team. Iliano played a crucial role in the offensive line, contributing to an average of 163.8 rushing yards per game, one of the best performances in the league. Vaught, who was the team’s second-leading tackler with 60 tackles and ranked second in the CAA with three interceptions, showcased his defensive prowess.
The third team included Sincere Baines, who rushed for 709 yards on 122 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per carry, and Elias Sherman, who recorded 5.5 sacks and was instrumental in the defensive strategy with his 10 tackles for loss.
Honorable mentions went to quarterback Carter Peevy, cornerback Vincent Nwachi, senior kickoff returner Trevin Ewing, and junior cornerback Jamaree Gibson, all contributing significantly to the Black Bears’ season.
