UPDATE: The Arizona Daily Star Sportsmen’s Fund urgently seeks your donations to send underprivileged children in Southern Arizona to summer camp. Your contributions directly impact local kids, allowing them to experience a week of adventure and learning at camps like YMCA and the newly introduced Sky School on Mt. Lemmon.
Just announced: In 2025, the Fund raised $272,576.43 thanks to generous donors, enabling 423 children from low-income households and military families to attend various camps. This initiative is more crucial than ever as it aims to expand partnerships and support for even more children in the coming years.
Donations to the Sportsmen’s Fund are not only impactful but also financially savvy. Contributions qualify for the Arizona tax credit, allowing joint filers to donate up to $987 for 2025 taxes and $1,009 for 2026 taxes. Individual filers can donate up to $495 and $506, respectively. This means you can support local children while reducing your tax burden.
The Fund has been a pillar in the community since 1947, helping over 44,814 children attend overnight camps. With 97 cents of every dollar raised going directly to scholarships, your contribution is maximized for children’s benefit. This year, the Fund plans to expand its offerings, partnering with the University of Arizona Sky School to provide a four-day science camp for middle and high school students from Title 1 schools.
Donations are welcome at any time throughout the year. Recent contributions have included generous gifts from individuals like Geraldine M. Moisant, who donated $2,500, and Barbara A. Miller, who contributed $1,000. Each donation, big or small, plays a vital role in changing the lives of young campers.
For those aged 70½ or older with assets in an IRA, there’s an opportunity for significant tax savings. Direct contributions from your IRA to the Sportsmen’s Fund may qualify as a Qualifying Charitable Distribution, potentially allowing you to deduct it even if you take the standard deduction. Always consult your tax adviser for details.
