UPDATE: A serious hit-and-run incident in South Austin has left a moped rider critically injured, prompting an urgent investigation. The crash occurred on Friday evening at approximately 7:30 PM in the 700 block of West William Cannon Drive, transforming a normal commute into a major police operation.
Authorities report that the moped rider was struck by two vehicles, both of which fled the scene without offering assistance. The victim has since been rushed to a local hospital, where they are receiving treatment for severe injuries.
Austin Police Department (APD), along with the Austin Fire Department and ATCEMS, were quick to respond to the scene. Investigators are now seeking help from the public to track down the drivers of the vehicles involved.
Detectives believe that a dark-colored pickup truck, possibly a 2015–2022 Chevrolet Colorado with a bed cover, was the first vehicle to collide with the moped operator. The pickup, driven by a woman, allegedly struck the rider, who then fell to the ground. Moments later, a silver sedan, driven by a man, ran over the rider. Neither vehicle stopped to assist.
Authorities are focused on the pickup truck, which is expected to show front-right damage. Images of both suspect vehicles have been released, and investigators are urging anyone who recognizes them to come forward.
Anyone with information is encouraged to submit an anonymous tip to Capital Area Crime Stoppers at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. Additionally, tips that lead to an arrest may qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
Police are also requesting that anyone with video, photos, or dashcam footage related to the crash preserve that material and share it with the APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111.
