Urgent Recall: 333,590 Kia and Hyundai Vehicles at Risk of Fuel Tank Melting

URGENT UPDATE: A major recall has just been announced affecting over 333,590 Kia and Hyundai vehicles due to a critical defect that may lead to fuel tank melting. This alarming issue predominantly affects the Kia K5 (model years 2021-2024) and the Hyundai Sonata (model years 2020-2023), specifically those equipped with 1.6-liter turbocharged engines.

According to documents filed with the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a faulty check valve can allow air to infiltrate the fuel tank, causing it to expand and ultimately contact hot exhaust components, which could lead to melting. This defect poses a serious safety risk for drivers and passengers alike.

Dealers are prepared to take immediate action by inspecting and replacing the defective check valves. Additionally, they will examine the fuel tank assembly for any damage and replace it if necessary. Engine control unit software will also be updated to address this defect. All repairs will be conducted at no cost to vehicle owners.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters starting on January 16, 2026. Kia customers can reach out to customer service at 800-333-4542 and should reference recall number SC356. Hyundai owners are advised to contact customer service at 855-371-9460, with recall number 286.

For those concerned about their vehicles, the NHTSA has made Vehicle Identification Numbers searchable on its website. Kia owners can check their VINs starting December 1, 2025, while Hyundai VINs became searchable on November 19, 2025.

This recall underscores the importance of vehicle safety and vigilance among owners of affected models. Stay alert and ensure your vehicle is safe to drive. Share this urgent news with fellow drivers to spread awareness and help prevent potential accidents.
