UPDATE: Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has just announced plans to fully acquire Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville, a critical healthcare facility in Clarksville, Tennessee, from Community Health Systems Inc. This acquisition is set to bolster VUMC’s regional healthcare network and improve patient care in a rapidly growing area.
VUMC, which has held a 20% minority stake in the hospital since 2021, aims to enhance its services for residents in Clarksville and the surrounding Montgomery County. The 270-bed facility will join VUMC’s expanding network of regional medical centers, including Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital and Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital, as part of its commitment to deliver high-quality care in convenient and cost-effective community settings.
“This acquisition allows us to better serve the health care needs of this rapidly growing area,” stated Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, President and CEO of VUMC. The integration of Tennova into the VUMC network is expected to bring a comprehensive range of adult and pediatric services, significantly impacting the healthcare landscape of the region.
The acquisition is part of VUMC’s strategy to respond to the needs of a community that has seen a population surge of 24% over the last decade, making Clarksville the fifth largest city in Tennessee with a population exceeding 200,000. VUMC has committed to hiring nearly all current employees of Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville who are in good standing, ensuring continuity of care and support for the local workforce during this transition.
“Integrating the Clarksville hospital into our regional network is an exciting step forward,” remarked Jane Freedman, MD, Deputy CEO of VUMC. “We look forward to collaborating with the dedicated physicians, nurses, and staff to support the community and expand access to care.”
During their partnership, VUMC and Tennova have successfully launched several initiatives, including an OB-GYN hospitalist program and Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center radiation oncology services. These developments highlight VUMC’s ongoing commitment to enhancing healthcare services in the region.
While the acquisition awaits regulatory approval, patients at Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville will experience no disruption in their care. Hospital officials are working closely to ensure a seamless transition, maintaining the high standards of service that the community relies on.
The Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville facility is recognized for its quality of care, with designations such as an Accredited Chest Pain Center and a Wound Care Center of Distinction. It also features a freestanding emergency department and multiple physician clinics, further solidifying its role as a vital healthcare provider.
As VUMC continues to expand its footprint in Middle Tennessee, this acquisition marks a significant milestone in its mission to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare to communities in need. Residents can expect enhanced services and a commitment to their health and wellness as VUMC integrates the Clarksville facility into its operational framework.
