West London Home Transformed with Vibrant Colors and Modern Design

An eye-catching renovation has transformed a Grade II-listed Victorian home in West London, showcasing a vibrant and playful design led by interior designer Peter Mikic. The client, eager for a colorful atmosphere, granted Mikic the freedom to explore creative ideas. The result is a lively yet balanced space that harmonizes contemporary elements with the home’s historical charm.

The project features a unique blend of colors and thoughtfully selected furniture. Mikic’s expertise shines through the intricate architectural details of the five-bedroom residence, including the stone staircase, cornicing, and large sash windows. These features serve as a stunning backdrop, allowing the bold design choices to shine.

Design Elements That Captivate

Mikic’s approach to incorporating color is both strategic and skillful. He emphasizes the role of white in the design, ensuring that vibrant hues do not overwhelm the space. In the hallway, white walls enhance the light-filled environment, complemented by a Murano glass pendant that adds a touch of elegance.

In the sitting room, a sizable bespoke sofa in a soft white provides a counterbalance to the striking artwork displayed on the walls. Mikic notes, “White is quite a statement colour on its own. It’s about using color sparingly and ensuring there isn’t too much of one color.”

Throughout the home, Mikic has expertly retained original features, which contribute significantly to its character. “What was important for me was to keep as many of these details as possible because they give the house so much charm,” he explains.

Mikic’s background in fashion informs his keen appreciation for color and form. “I love color. For me, color brings out emotions,” he shares. The inclusion of mid-century pieces, such as antique coffee tables and sideboards by Gio Ponti, introduces both charm and contemporary relevance to the design.

A Functional Family Home

The first floor’s sitting room, described by Mikic as the grandest space, sets the tone for the rest of the home. The starting point for the color scheme was an emerald green curved sofa, which inspired the surrounding colors in the rug and decor. Warm white textural wallpaper creates a soothing atmosphere, while carefully selected shades of greens, yellows, and reds in the furnishings invite warmth and comfort.

The design caters to the needs of a family with three children, ensuring that each room is functional and inviting. The sitting room doubles as a gathering space for the client’s teenagers, allowing for casual interactions among friends. “It’s not a shut-off space. It isn’t too formal, and it’s suitable for any age group,” Mikic remarks.

The breakfast nook adjacent to the kitchen further exemplifies this blend of functionality and joy. A large orange leather banquette paired with distinctive wavy chairs creates a playful environment ideal for family meals. Mikic notes that the neutral walls serve as a perfect foundation, allowing the vibrant colors to flourish.

In the dining room, a more intimate ambiance is achieved with smoky green textured wallpaper, enhancing the cozy feel during evening gatherings. An oversized mirror, sourced from an antique brass frame in Prague, reflects the room’s charm, while a pink chandelier provides soft illumination, making it suitable for entertaining.

Mikic’s attention to sensory experience is evident throughout the home. “This house does have a lot of texture, and I think it’s interesting because everything is rather tactile,” he explains. The designer aims to create spaces that are visually appealing and invite touch, enhancing the overall experience for residents and guests alike.

The bedrooms embody this ethos, with each room designed to evoke a distinct mood. Deep, moody purple hues add to the evening ambiance, while the luxurious bathroom features marble finishes paired with brushed gold and brass fixtures.

In summary, Peter Mikic has successfully transformed this West London home into a vibrant sanctuary that captures the essence of modern living while honoring its historical roots. Each room is not only visually arresting but also designed to be enjoyed by the entire family, providing a welcoming atmosphere that seamlessly blends color, texture, and comfort.
