Woman Survives Assault in Chicago’s Loop, Grateful to Heroic Bystander

URGENT UPDATE: A woman was assaulted in Chicago’s Loop on July 12, 2023, just minutes from her home. Sierra Ruggiero, 25, was attacked around 7:20 PM on Ida B. Wells Drive when a man on a bicycle pushed her into traffic and attempted a sexual assault.

Witness Alx Taylor, 21, witnessed the horrifying incident and intervened by yelling at the assailant, who fled the scene. Ruggiero expressed her profound gratitude for Taylor’s bravery, stating, “Once he ran away, she came up to me… she was the kindest soul.”

Ruggiero suffered visible injuries, including bruises to her legs and tailbone, but the emotional impact of the attack lingers. “I don’t think I will ever fully mentally recover from this,” she shared, highlighting the lasting fear and anxiety that now accompany her walks in the city.

The attack occurred near the La Salle Blue Line station as Ruggiero was leaving. She described the assailant as wearing all black clothing and a blue surgical mask while riding a small bicycle. The police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, but the attacker remains at large.

Ruggiero, who moved to Chicago from Florida two years ago, noted an increased sense of vigilance following the attack. She now avoids distractions like headphones and keeps her phone accessible, maintaining a tight grip on her 40-ounce stainless steel water bottle for potential self-defense. However, during the assault, her water bottle was knocked from her hand.

The incident has intensified Ruggiero’s awareness of recent reports concerning a man dubbed the “Loop puncher,” linked to unprovoked attacks on women in the area. “It’s something I never thought would happen to me,” she said, reflecting on the unpredictability of safety in urban environments.

In a bid to raise awareness, Ruggiero shared her experience on TikTok, urging other women to be vigilant. She is currently working to obtain security camera footage from the area to assist the investigation.

Taylor, who supported Ruggiero until paramedics arrived, stated, “I felt so bad for her… I didn’t want her to be alone.” Both women hope that sharing their story will help others recognize the risks in their surroundings.

As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information about the assailant to come forward. The community remains on alert as Ruggiero navigates her new reality, aware that safety can never be taken for granted.
