Drivers on Interstate 476 can expect significant delays this Sunday, March 31, 2024, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) implements temporary lane striping associated with a major reconstruction initiative costing $63.7 million. This project affects both northbound and southbound lanes between the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and Route 3 (West Chester Pike) interchanges from 08:00 to 16:00.
The lane striping is part of a comprehensive effort aimed at resurfacing, repairing, and modernizing nearly 17 miles of the Blue Route. This extensive project encompasses various infrastructure elements, including on- and off-ramps and bridges, stretching from West Conshohocken Borough to I-95 in Ridley Township. Motorists should prepare for potential backups throughout the day due to the mobile lane closures in place.
Under this initiative, PennDOT’s contractor, H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, will perform numerous tasks designed to enhance the interstate’s condition. These tasks include milling and overlaying travel lanes and shoulders, repairing 49 structures, upgrading 21 stormwater management basins, and addressing rock slope stabilization issues. Additionally, the project will involve repairing existing sound walls and replacing drainage inlets at select locations. New pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderail will also be installed.
The primary goal of the project is to extend the service life of I-476 while simultaneously improving ride quality and safety. These enhancements are particularly crucial in areas where roadside infrastructure and drainage systems have deteriorated over time. The project is fully financed with federal funds, reflecting a significant investment in regional transportation infrastructure.
In light of the construction activities, PennDOT advises motorists to allow extra travel time, remain vigilant in work zones, and plan alternative routes where feasible.
