Man Steals Ontario Transit Bus for Joyride with Passengers Onboard

A man took an Ontario transit bus for a joyride on Tuesday night, with approximately 10 passengers still onboard. The incident occurred after the actual bus driver stepped away to take a break at a terminal. The suspect entered the bus, drove along its route, and even denied a passenger entry due to an expired bus pass, according to Hamilton police.

The Hamilton Police confirmed that the joyride began when the man drove the articulated bus, making several stops for passengers. Initially, many of the passengers did not realize that the person at the wheel was not a legitimate driver. As the man began to make incorrect turns, they intervened by providing him with directions, as reported by CBC.

Police monitored the bus closely, taking precautions to ensure public safety. They utilized the bus’s GPS in cooperation with Hamilton Street Railway. According to police spokesperson Trevor McKenna, they kept their sirens off to avoid alarming the driver. “We didn’t want to spook him,” McKenna stated. “We didn’t want to make this a tragedy.”

After about 15 minutes, officers successfully brought the bus to a halt and arrested the suspect without incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the escapade. The individual, who has not been identified and lacks a fixed address, faces multiple charges. These include theft and possession of property valued over $5,000, obstructing police, and driving while prohibited.

The suspect is set to appear in court to respond to the charges. Police expressed relief that the situation ended without any physical harm. McKenna remarked on the unusual nature of the event, acknowledging the comical aspects while emphasizing its seriousness. “We’re thankful nobody was hurt,” he concluded.

This incident raises questions about security protocols on public transit systems and the responsibilities of operators to ensure the safety of both passengers and the community. As investigations continue, the Hamilton community reflects on the unexpected turn of events that unfolded on that Tuesday night.
