A man from Minnesota has successfully transitioned from homelessness to independent living in Grand Forks. After facing significant challenges upon his arrival, Troy Miller recently moved into his own apartment after staying at the city’s primary emergency shelter, the Northlands Rescue Mission.
Originally from Sandstone, Minnesota, Miller relocated to Grand Forks earlier this year following a six-month inpatient treatment program in St. Cloud. His intention was to access outpatient treatment, but he found himself at the Mission instead, where he was one of many seeking support. “I don’t know anybody here, and it was really hard to get started,” he explained.
Miller faced a tough environment, compounded by a lack of a strong support system. He noted that drug addiction has affected his family, making it difficult to find stability. After separating from his longtime girlfriend and losing his previous housing, Miller recognized he needed to prioritize his own health and well-being. “I always want to help people. I never want to help myself,” he stated.
His daughters have been a crucial source of motivation, encouraging him to focus on his own progress. Miller keeps in regular contact with them, speaking on the phone every morning and night. “They help a lot. They’re all very proud of me,” he remarked.
A new friendship formed in Grand Forks also played a key role in his journey. After completing some work for a local resident, Miller received assistance in finding an apartment. He moved in on March 15, 2025, marking a significant milestone in his recovery journey.
Although he still faces challenges, such as obtaining new glasses, completing his medication-assisted treatment, and applying for Social Security benefits, Miller remains optimistic. “This is the first time I’ve been sober for four months,” he shared. “I love being sober.”
Miller’s experience reflects broader efforts by the Northlands Rescue Mission, which has reportedly helped approximately 260 individuals secure housing in 2025 alone. His story highlights the importance of community support and personal determination in overcoming difficult circumstances.
As Miller looks forward to welcoming his family to his new home, he expresses gratitude for the progress he has made and the support he has received along the way.
