A 46-year-old man lost his life after triggering an avalanche while ski touring in the Allgäu Alps in southern Germany on March 12, 2024. According to local police, the man was skiing alone when he set off the avalanche on the northern flank of Iseler Mountain during the afternoon. Following the incident, he contacted emergency services for assistance.
Rescue operations faced significant challenges due to adverse weather conditions and low visibility, which initially hindered helicopter access to the site. A mountain rescue team was dispatched to the location on foot, but unstable snow conditions complicated their efforts and delayed the rescue. Police confirmed that the man was eventually found in a steep snowfield below the north face of the mountain.
Despite receiving resuscitation while being airlifted to the hospital, the man was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities noted that the avalanche occurred outside of the secured ski area, which was not deemed to be in danger at the time of the incident.
