Ukraine launched a significant operation against two oil tankers linked to Russia’s efforts to circumvent Western sanctions. On November 29, 2023, Ukraine’s security service, known as the SBU, confirmed that marine drones successfully struck the tankers, which are part of a so-called ‘shadow fleet’ used for exporting oil. This operation was conducted in the Black Sea with collaboration from the Ukrainian navy.
According to a source within the SBU who preferred to remain anonymous, the two tankers, identified as the Kairos and Virat, were empty and en route to the Russian port of Novorossiysk, a significant terminal for oil exports. The attack resulted in critical damage to both vessels, which was confirmed by video footage showing the aftermath of the strikes.
Turkish authorities reported that explosions were heard near Turkey’s Bosphorus Strait on the same day, leading to fires on the tankers and prompting rescue operations for the crew members on board. The SBU official stated, “This will deal a significant blow to Russian oil transportation,” underlining the strategic impact of the strikes on Russia’s ability to export oil and finance its ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Ukraine has been vocal in its calls for stronger international actions against Russia’s shadow fleet, which it claims has been instrumental in enabling Moscow to export substantial quantities of oil despite existing sanctions. The operation reflects Ukraine’s commitment to targeting the infrastructure that supports Russia’s military operations.
As the situation develops, the international community continues to monitor the implications of these attacks on the broader geopolitical landscape, particularly regarding energy supply and security in the region.
