The alarming event occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. near the 149th Street-Grand Concourse station, halting service and raising safety concerns among commuters.
Officials have confirmed that three cars separated from a 10-car No. 4 subway train, leading to significant delays and detours for riders in the area. New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow labeled the separation as “an unusual incident” but reassured the public that the train’s brakes activated immediately, stopping both sections safely.
“The system itself failed as it should have in a safe position,” Crichlow stated. Eyewitness footage captured the distressing scene, showing detached train cars with cables hanging, as emergency personnel flooded the station to assist stranded passengers.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported; however, the emotional toll on commuters was palpable. One mother, Bridget Berkley, expressed her anxiety while waiting for her son, who was on board.
“It’s panicky, it’s very panicky,” Berkley told Eyewitness News. “I’ve been standing here stressed and worried for my son and waiting and just praying for his return.”
