Urgent Need Grows as St. Blase Food Pantry Supports Families

UPDATE: The St. Blase Food Pantry in Summit, Illinois, is facing an urgent demand as local families struggle with soaring living costs. As the community grapples with the impossible choice of paying rent or buying groceries, the food pantry serves as a critical lifeline.

Every week, 80 to 90 people rely on the pantry’s resources, which operate under the auspices of Catholic Charities and the Albertine Sisters. Sister Patricia Brynirska confirmed, “We serve about 80 to 90 people every day on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, and also provide a hot meal on Wednesdays.”

Local resident Aubrey Lewandowski, a mother of four, shared her experience, stating, “Everything’s just getting more and more expensive. I’m just trying to make everything stretch as far as possible.” After recently losing her job, Lewandowski turned to the food pantry for essential support.

“I was unemployed for a period where I wasn’t working at all, and I completely relied on this, or we wouldn’t have eaten,” she explained. Although she has found work, the high cost of living continues to pressure her finances.

The St. Blase Food Pantry, located in the basement of St. Blase Church, has been serving the community for over 20 years. It offers staples such as pasta, sauce, vegetables, bread, and fresh fruit, providing essential support for families facing financial strain.

Lewandowski emphasized the pantry’s importance, stating, “This gives me something that I can rely on. I can rely that I can come here every month.” She noted that it alleviates the constant stress of deciding which bills to pay and whether to prioritize rent or food.

The pantry is part of the larger Feed the Love campaign by ABC7 Chicago, which aims to bring awareness and resources to local food banks. As the cost of groceries continues to rise, local organizations are calling for community support to meet the escalating needs.

Authorities warn that the demand may increase as winter approaches, making it crucial for more residents to contribute to food donation efforts. “Every week, I’m looking at which bill needs to be paid first. Do I pay my utility bills? Do I pay my rent? Do I get food?” Lewandowski said, encapsulating the dire situation many families face.

The St. Blase Food Pantry remains committed to serving the community, but it requires ongoing support to maintain its operations. Local residents are encouraged to donate to the pantry or volunteer their time to help those in need.

As the community bands together through initiatives like the Feed the Love campaign, the urgent need for assistance highlights the ongoing struggles families face in these challenging economic times.
