UPDATE: With just over a week left, the inaugural San Antonio Marathon is set to kick off from December 5-7, 2023, and organizers are urgently calling for volunteers to ensure the event’s success. The three-day marathon weekend features a festive 5K on Friday night, an engaging expo on Saturday, and both half and full marathons on Sunday.
As anticipation builds, San Antonio Sports reveals they expect over 18,000 registrations across all events. This surge in participation highlights the community’s excitement but also underscores the critical need for volunteer support. According to Jenny Carnes, President & CEO of San Antonio Sports, “We need quite a few more people to come out and help us at our 5K on Friday night. We need volunteers at the expo, and then at the finish line — which I think is the most rewarding place to volunteer as you see all those runners cross the line.”
Among the volunteers is seasoned runner and supporter Heather Hepp, who emphasizes the importance of giving back to the community. “You’re helping someone succeed, and you don’t know — it could be the very first time somebody is running a marathon,” Hepp stated. Her commitment to volunteering stems from her own experiences as a runner, understanding the profound impact volunteers have on participants’ journeys.
The call for volunteers is particularly urgent as the marathon weekend approaches. There are still many roles to fill, especially for the kickoff 5K event on Friday, December 5. Volunteers can contribute in various capacities, from assisting at the expo to cheering on runners at the finish line.
Inspiringly, Dan Andrews, a former marathon volunteer, shared how his experience ignited his passion for running. “After volunteering a couple of years, I decided that if they could do it, I could do it,” he remarked, reflecting on how he ran his first half-marathon after getting involved.
San Antonio Sports is encouraging individuals, groups, and teams to sign up to volunteer. Those interested can find more information and register at SanAntonioSports.org.
With the marathon weekend fast approaching, the community is urged to step up and be part of this historic event that promises to bring together runners and supporters alike. Don’t miss this chance to make a difference in the lives of countless athletes and celebrate the spirit of endurance and camaraderie.
As excitement builds, stay tuned for more updates on this landmark weekend.
