Spiritbox Discusses Gear and Sound Ahead of Nashville Show

Canadian alt-metal band Spiritbox recently performed at Nashville’s Pinnacle, where guitarist Mike Stringer and bassist Josh Gilbert shared insights into their unique sound and equipment. In a session with Chris Kies from Premier Guitar, the duo highlighted the innovative gear they rely on to create their signature down-tuned mayhem.

Innovative Instruments and Gear

Stringer’s primary instrument is the Aristides STX, a custom-made guitar available in 6-, 7-, and 8-string configurations. Notably, Stringer opts for the 7-string model for its ability to handle “stupid-low” tunings with clarity, thanks to its construction from a proprietary material called Arium. This guitar features Stringer’s signature Bare Knuckle Halcyon pickups and an EverTune bridge, allowing for precise tuning stability. The band typically tunes these guitars to F-sharp using Ernie Ball Custom Paradigm strings in gauges ranging from .010 to .074.

Stringer also discussed the Ocho Loco, an 8-string Aristides guitar, which he refers to as the “prototype.” This guitar plays a significant role on the track “Fata Morgana.”

When it comes to effects and amplification, Stringer uses a Fractal Axe-Fx III processor, favoring the PVH 6160 model, which is based on the EVH 5150 Stealth. His setup includes an ART Pro Audio SP4X4 power distribution system, a Shure AD4Q wireless system, and a Radial JX-44 for signal routing.

Pedalboard and Bass Setup

Stringer’s pedalboard, constructed by a friend at Omilion Audio, features an extensive range of effects. It includes a Fractal FC-12 Foot Controller, a Radial SGI-44, and a Peterson StroboStomp tuner. Other notable pedals on his board include a Boss DD-6, Electro-Harmonix Freeze, and a pair of DigiTech Whammy Ricochets, among others.

Gilbert, who also utilizes a Fractal Axe-Fx III, complements Stringer’s setup with his own equipment. His backstage rack features a Shure AD4D and a Radial JX-42. Gilbert’s bass rig includes the Quilter Bass Block 800 and a Darkglass B7K for additional tone shaping. His tonal changes are managed through Ableton, showcasing a modern approach to live performance.
