Warren, MI – Center Line’s girls basketball team secured a significant victory against Warren Mott, winning 45-33 in a Macomb Area Conference Silver Division matchup. Despite ongoing challenges, including player absences due to illness and injuries, the Panthers improved their season record to 7-2.
The team has faced numerous obstacles this season. A key player was sidelined with illness, while another attended a club volleyball tournament. Additionally, two players left the team in December, leaving Center Line with a limited roster. Coach Josh Banks noted that the team has operated with just seven players available for this game, emphasizing the determination and effort displayed by his squad.
“We found a way to win another one, even with only seven available players,” Banks stated. “It’s been hard because of kids being out sick, and injuries have taken a toll on our roster.” He highlighted the team’s resilience, as they started the season with twelve players but now consistently face the challenge of a smaller lineup.
In the latest match, junior point guard Janiyah Thomas showcased her skills by scoring a game-high 20 points, reaffirming her position as a standout player in the league. Senior guard Madison Gilmore contributed with 15 points, while senior forward Alaya Verbrugge made her presence felt on the boards with 14 rebounds, demonstrating the team’s commitment to battling for every possession.
“Janiyah is having a great season. She leads us in every category,” Banks remarked. He praised the entire team’s effort, noting the importance of players like Gilmore and Verbrugge who fight hard for every point and rebound. “The effort and work ethic are there. Last year we only won two games, and now we’ve already won seven.”
The game began with Center Line taking an early lead, racing to a 15-6 start. Warren Mott responded by narrowing the gap with an 11-9 second quarter, bringing the halftime score to 24-17. The Marauders gradually clawed their way back, tying the game at 31-31 by the end of the third quarter. However, Center Line’s determination shone through in the final quarter, as they closed the game with a 14-2 run.
“They left it all on the floor,” Banks noted, reflecting on his team’s performance. Mott, which also faced its own hurdles, saw senior Conamaro Ndana, who recently signed with the NCAA Division I University of Florida for soccer, lead her team with nine points. Teammates Zeena Ndana and Katelyn Wioskowski added eight points each, but it was not enough to overcome Center Line’s strong finish.
As the season progresses, Center Line continues to demonstrate that hard work and determination can lead to success, even in the face of adversity. With their next matchup on the horizon, the Panthers hope to maintain their momentum and further build on their impressive record.
