Leica is taking a significant step to enhance the representation of female photographers through its newly introduced LOBA Women Grant. Set to open for applications on February 11, 2026, the grant will be integrated into the prestigious LOBA competition, which showcases talent in photography globally.
The LOBA Women Grant will provide a financial boost of 10,000 euros, approximately $12,000 at current exchange rates, as well as a Leica Q camera. This initiative aims to support women photographers in executing their creative projects, whether they are ongoing or brand new. The recipients’ work will be displayed at the Leica Oskar Barnack Award exhibition, beginning at Leica’s headquarters in Wetzlar and followed by exhibitions at various Leica Galleries and photography festivals worldwide.
Application Details and Selection Process
The application period for the inaugural LOBA Women Grant will remain open until March 15, 2026. To be eligible, applicants must be professional female photographers aged at least 21. After the submission period, an annually rotating jury will evaluate the proposals and select the grant recipient. The goal is to enable the winner to complete their project in time for the following year’s award ceremony.
The theme for this grant is open, allowing photographers to explore any topic. However, the committee emphasizes that successful submissions will often reflect the relationship between humans and their environment, whether that be through social, cultural, or ecological lenses.
Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Art Director and General Representative of Leica Galleries International, expressed the initiative’s broader vision: “In addition to a critical approach to our societal, ecological, or political challenges, we want to encourage women photographers to submit projects that, in particular, present hopeful perspectives, document inspiring approaches to solutions, or reveal ways to bring about change.”
Building on a Legacy of Support
The launch of the LOBA Women Grant builds on Leica’s long-standing commitment to supporting women in photography. Since its inception in 2019, the Leica Women Photo Award has expanded to various regions, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
This new grant not only reinforces Leica’s dedication to diversity within the photographic arts but also aims to spotlight the unique narratives and perspectives that women photographers bring to the medium. As the photography landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like the LOBA Women Grant will be crucial in fostering creativity and innovation among female artists.
For professional women photographers interested in applying, the LOBA Women Grant represents a valuable opportunity to gain recognition and support for their work.
