TMSA Taekwondo Club Shines with 14 Medals at National Capitol Open

The TMSA Taekwondo Club made headlines this weekend by securing a remarkable 14 medals at the 2026 National Capitol Open Taekwondo Championship, held April 24-25 in Virginia. The two-day event saw 14 student-athletes from elementary through high school divisions deliver an unprecedented one-to-one conversion of participants to podium finishes, underscoring a breakthrough in youth martial arts competition.

Competing in a highly competitive field, the team returned home with 6 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze medals, signaling the strength of TMSA’s structured and progressive training program. The program’s focus on long-term athlete development, particularly among younger students with three years of foundational training, proved instrumental in driving technical skill and consistent performance under pressure.

Historic Recognition and Growing National Presence

TMSA’s achievement earned special recognition from Grand Master Hyo Joo Lee, tournament organizer, who presented the club with a large trophy and a distinction as the first-ever high school team to participate in the national event. This milestone expands opportunities for school-based teams to compete at high levels previously dominated by independent martial arts clubs.

“We are incredibly proud of our students—not only for their medals but for their discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship,” said coach Bastug. “This accomplishment marks a vital milestone and sets a strong foundation for the future.”

The award signals a growing shift towards integrating school athletics with competitive martial arts, providing Delaware and US youth athletes with expanded avenues to showcase talent and develop critical life skills.

Medal Winners Highlight Depth of Talent Across Age Groups

Medalists ranged from 1st graders to high school competitors, reflecting depth and a balanced talent pipeline within the program. Gold medals were secured by young stars including A. Marikanti (1st Grade), Y. Senthilkumar (6th Grade), and several others from lower grades who demonstrated advanced skill levels beyond their years. Silver medals extended into middle and high school grades, while bronze honors rounded out a well-distributed team success.

The standout performances across divisions not only boost TMSA’s reputation but also highlight the viability of long-term, education-led development programs as critical to sustained competitive success in youth sports nationwide.

Community and Institutional Support Drive Success

The championship also underscored the crucial role of family and institutional support. Ten of the 14 athletes were backed by family members who provided enormous support during the event, creating a strong community atmosphere. The TMSA Taekwondo Club publicly acknowledged school administration and staff, including leaders such as Principal Alden of TMSA Triangle High School and Principal Yuksekkaya of TMSA Apex, whose involvement integrates academic and athletic achievement.

This alignment between schools and extracurricular training fosters leadership, discipline, and student engagement, elements that are increasingly vital in youth development across Delaware and the US.

Looking Ahead: Momentum Builds for Future Competitions

With its impressive haul and historic recognition in Virginia this April, the TMSA Taekwondo Club is set to strengthen its status within regional and national competitions. The club’s proven athlete development model and rising participation offer a promising outlook for future tournaments.

The coming months could see TMSA athletes expanding their footprint, inspiring other educational institutions to invest in martial arts and structured sports programs that cultivate resilience and excellence in young Americans.

The results signal more than medals—they highlight a winning formula built on discipline, community support, and strategic growth that could reshape competitive youth sports nationwide.
