A **17-year-old girl** tragically fell approximately **30 meters** to her death at **Moffat Beach** in **Queensland** while attempting to take a photo of the sunset. The horrifying incident occurred on **December 23, 2023**, at around **6:40 PM**, as she climbed over a safety fence with friends. Despite immediate attention from police and emergency responders, she succumbed to severe head injuries at the scene.
Authorities report that the group was watching the sunset when they sought a better vantage point. As they attempted to return up the embankment, the girl slipped and fell down the cliff. Her friends could only watch in horror as she plummeted.
“[She] slipped and fell 30 meters onto the rocks below,” stated **Detective Peter Hocken** from **Queensland Police**. The tragedy was compounded by the presence of off-duty medical professionals nearby who rushed to assist but were unable to save her.
“They located the young lady and provided as much assistance as they could,” Hocken continued. “Unfortunately, she passed away on scene due to the severity of her injuries. Life can be a bit unfair, especially at this time of year, just before Christmas.”
Adding to the distress, another woman who attempted to aid the teenager sustained minor injuries during the rescue effort. The treacherous terrain complicated the response, with firefighters struggling to reach the scene, some slipping on the rocky ground.
Warnings had been posted at the lookout urging visitors to stay behind safety barriers. “Especially at this time of year, and throughout the year, just please respect the barriers in place,” said **Ryan Dubyk** from **Queensland Fire and Rescue**. “Stay back.”
Investigations revealed that the girls had taken an unofficial path towards the lookout, which had a non-permanent barrier meant for safety. A report will be prepared for the coroner to determine whether the warning signs were adequate and if further improvements are necessary.
The lookout, known for its stunning views of **Moffat Beach** and the **Coral Sea**, is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Tragically, this is not the first fatal incident in the area. In **2021**, a **58-year-old mother** fell to her death while visiting another beauty spot in **Cairns**, demonstrating the ongoing risks associated with such locations.
The community is left reeling from this heartbreaking event, which serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in climbing over safety barriers for the perfect photo. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of future visitors to this breathtaking yet perilous lookout.
