UPDATE: A single mother in Phoenixville is urgently seeking support as she navigates financial struggles while pursuing her education. Whitney, a 33-year-old criminal justice student at Montgomery Community College, has dedicated herself to her studies, but the holiday season is proving challenging for her family of four children, aged 5 to 11.
Despite completing her final semester, Whitney’s leave of absence from her job as a personal care worker has left her financially strained just as Christmas approaches. “I know that my degree will lead to a good career down the road, but right now we are really struggling to make ends meet,” she stated, highlighting the difficulties faced by many families this season.
Whitney is not alone. Operation Holiday, a program established in 1991, is stepping up its efforts to support families like hers throughout Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties. This year, the initiative has partnered with 21 agencies, enabling them to reach 199 families with a total of 403 children in need.
The urgency of the situation is palpable. Last year, Operation Holiday raised nearly $85,000, which provided gift cards to 366 children and grocery gift cards to 189 families. With contributions fully funding the initiative, Whitney has received gift cards to help cover her family’s holiday meals and presents.
“The generosity of others is a beautiful thing,” Whitney shared, acknowledging the crucial support provided by Orion Communities, which has helped her during this difficult time. Whitney has worked hard to overcome past challenges, including expunging her criminal record, removing her children from an abusive situation, and confronting personal trauma.
Operation Holiday is designed to ensure no family goes without during the holidays. Families are referred by agencies, ensuring targeted support without overhead costs. All donations go directly to local families in need. This year, with the growing number of referrals, the program’s impact is more significant than ever.
For those looking to assist, donations can be made online through a secure portal in partnership with TriCounty Community Network. Contributions can also be mailed to various local addresses, with options for anonymous giving or tributes.
As the holiday season continues, the community’s involvement is crucial. Whitney’s story is just one of many, and the need for support is urgent. The generosity of the community can make a substantial difference in the lives of families striving to create a joyful holiday despite challenging circumstances.
