UPDATE: Victims of rampant car thefts are responding to a significant settlement announced by New York State Attorney General Letitia James. A bipartisan coalition of attorney generals has secured up to $9 million from Hyundai and Kia for failing to implement effective anti-theft technology in their vehicles.
With car thefts skyrocketing, especially in areas like Monroe County, where over 1,400 Kias and Hyundais were stolen in just six months of 2023, this settlement brings critical reforms. Victims like Carissa Visalli of Rochester shared their distress, stating, “There’s always cars in front of the house… but the one time I parked on the side of that road, the next day I go to leave and it’s gone.”
The settlement includes provisions for Hyundai and Kia to cover reasonable theft-related expenses, offering up to $4,500 for total losses and $2,250 for partial losses. Victims can also claim up to $375 for attempted theft expenses.
Victims continue to face challenges. “I’ve been really grateful for my coworkers to be able to give me rides to and from work,” said Winnifred Kingsfield, another Rochester resident whose car was stolen in early November. Her vehicle was later found damaged, adding to her stress as she juggles insurance claims and dealership communications while working during business hours.
As of now, Visalli’s vehicle remains missing, leaving her in limbo. “I’m just kind of waiting for help or some kind of, like, miracle,” she said, expressing concern over the baby items that were in her vehicle, including a stroller.
In addition to the financial settlement, Hyundai and Kia will pay $4.5 million in penalties to a coalition of states, with New York expected to receive over $220,000 from this fund. Many of the thefts are believed to be committed by minors, raising further concerns about vehicle security.
As car theft incidents continue, the National Insurance Crime Bureau recommends preventive measures such as rolling up windows, parking in well-lit areas, and ensuring doors are locked. The urgency of this situation underscores the need for immediate reforms in vehicle security to protect consumers and restore confidence.
Stay tuned for further updates as affected victims navigate this ongoing crisis and await necessary support from the settlement.
